Possibility to import own DEM

  • I was wondring if there could be a tool implemented to import different dem data. As far as i understood the current DEM data is the Us srtm data set. which is global covering but has a low resolution.

For many places there is high resolution (laserscanned) dem available and often even free. (UK, NL and certain geoportals in germany.) And many may even be used completly free even in commercial projects. I was wondering if there could be a tool introduced to import for example GeoTiff files in future, when terrain editing is implemented. It would greatly enhance the ability to built realistic maps, especially since smaller heigh differences are just completly smoothed out in the srtm data. (eg dikes, small valleys and waterways.) The geotiff i've seen are so accurate they even show where the sidewalks starts and end, the filtered versions of the raw super detailed ones are very useable to generate terrain.
