Switch to unity, will we still be able to use plugins for FAP's?

  • I still haven't bought LOTUS i'm afraid, i keep hanging onto Omsi 2, as my Fahrerarbeitsplatz is based on a MAN NG272 bus,

And i love Omsi because it allows me to re-live my childhood of living in Germany in the 1980's, and seeing similar buses on the streets of Rheindahlen, Krefeld, Düsseldorf etc... to some nostalgia is a great draw (and seller of bus simulators)

But one day i will make the switch from Omsi to LOTUS (if the old omsi standard buses were ported over i'd buy LOTUS right now)

But i am wondering how the switch to the unity game engine will affect things regarding reading variables to make FAP's work? i.e. the warning lights, gauges, data strings for the Ibis, ticket printer and so on.

  • I think all plugins etc. will still work, its more a graphical thing. And the Lotus-Devs will also release a converter to convert old scripts to the new "C# Based" Script format.

For the busses you will have to wait for new addons or mods. The Lotus-Developers do not convert any Omsi 2 contents. Recently, a new Addon has been annouced https://store.steampowered.com/app/2691300/LOTUSSimulator_Stadtbus_Hamburg/ (Lotus Statdbus Hamburg).

Its the first "bus focussed" addon but still in development and we will see what busses will be included. So there is something happening in the bus section.

  • The plugins only use some interfaces from the game (given functions with giver arguments), that's why you can write them in any language (the lexicon article suggest pascal but I couldn't make a timer work in it, so I wrote one in C for example).

If your script variable names and types don't change, I don't think the plugins would stop working. Also the plugin just gathers the data and outputs it via serial, the more complex coding is on the hardware itself (read every data in time, while also update gauges and lights as soon as possible, while also sometimes generate variable frequency signals for taghrograps/speedometers...etc).
