One big map vs many small

  • Hi,

    Another question from me.

So if I decided to create two lines from one city, so one long line (~40 stops) that goes to suburbs and one city line (I already posted some pics on the forum) what would be better - to have separate maps for each line or to work on both lines in the same project. The terminus of the suburban line is relatively near the city line streets but there could be some visible separation.

If this was Omsi, I would separate them without thinking. But I wonder what's better in/for Lotus?

Also, these lines would use the same PIS.

    Thank you.

  • I think it is too soon to answer this : the new engine is not ready yet.

But I was thinking on the same thing : one map for all or one map for one line...

For optimisation purpose, the second option is obviously better, but it will require more work. And we don't know how it will be in the new engine, which LOD can be admitted to have 60fps.

So at this point, you have to decide by your own what are risks to have 2 lines on your map, if they are close to each other or if they just cross at one precise point.

  • If this was Omsi, I would separate them without thinking.

Even in OMSI I wouldn't do so. What kind of a benefit do you think of in LOTUS? I can't imagine any benefit.

    Greets

Linear maps require way less resource because you don't build any unnecessary parts that you won't be driving on anytime you play. However in combined routes, there are junctions where multiple branches are loaded at the same time, hence requiring seemingly unnecessary resources. There are available LOTUS maps which tend to have this problem, like Sonnenburg, where other lines are just so close to yours that they are loaded even while not driving on them.

  • My main point for separation in Omsi was just because of performance and my worry how it would handle this large map. I know there are big maps, but still.

Another thing is that these two lines could qualify as separate projects, but a fact that in Lotus I can easily jump and work on different tiles in any moment, even on those that are far away, changes things.
